Twelve Die as Fire Rips Kansas City Apartments
A three story brick building in Kansas City caught fire early killing 12 people including eight children. An infant died in his father's arms after leaping from a blazing window as about 60 residents fled down ladders. Fire officials said the fire spread from a first floor shaft to the third floor, gutting that level where most victims died. Eleven fire crews battled the blaze amid water-pressure issues on the hilltop site.
