A 500000 fire improvement bond was rejected by 1592 to 1154 votes as 37.7 percent of 7279 registered voters turned out. Mayor MacClure announced the defeat and officials said timing and cost influenced the result. The city will reassess needs for a new station and equipment.
President Nixon defended American military strength at Falcon Stadium before 676 Air Force Academy graduates and about 40,000 in attendance. He attacked unilateral disarmament and warned that turning away from world affairs would yield a peace that stifles freedom. He planned a trip to San Clemente and a conference with South Vietnam's Nguyen Van Thieu, after touring the academy.
The City Council approved 6.25 to 11.25 percent salary increases for all city staff costing about 109000 annually. A Treasury official told the Senate Criminal Laws subcommittee that a 1968 Supreme Court ruling halted federal prosecutions of about 800 gamblers and crime syndicate leaders. He urged passage of a bill to criminalize federal gambling tax violations while protecting self incrimination rights by barring disclosure of tax payments to other agencies.
