Kimball clocked 8:46.5 leading a fast final, while Hulst set a national sophomore record with 8:50.5. Crowd reached about 11 000 as meet highlighted by Kimball’s 4:06.6 mile.

CIF 3-A Championship Game Set for Tomorrow

Lompoc-Vandenberg Wrestlers Clinch State AAU Titles
Kris Andrews and Benjo Williams won 115 and 132 pound high school titles at the California state AAU Freestyle meet at Hancock College. Williams went 7-0, Andrews 6-0, helping the Lompoc-Vandenberg Wrestling Club capture the state team crown with runners up Hervey and Scruggs and third place Eppley and Walker. The 348-competitor tourney was the largest freestyle event locally. In intermediate action, Larson and Small finished second, while Duggan, Daniels and Mosby earned third.

Skip Walther Killed In Miami Boat Race Tragedy
Speed racing disasters claim four lives on three continents Sunday. In Miami, Skip Walther brother of Salt Walther died after his power boat crashed at Miami Marine Stadium during a practice run for the Champion Spark Plug regatta. He suffered a skull fracture and brain injuries and was dead on arrival at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Walther was a replacement for Jim McCormick who was severely hurt in a test run days earlier. The deaths include two Japanese drivers in Japan and a German accident at Mainz.

Muir Wins California High School Track Title
Muir of Pasadena captured the state championship for the third time in 56 years, scoring 23 points to Wilson of San Francisco’s 14. Fred Shaw led the Mustangs with 13.7 in the high hurdles and 18.9 in the lows, then anchored a 3:13.8 mile relay featuring a national best. Rich Kimball of De La Salle won the mile in 4:06.6.
