Fertilizer Shortage Seen Easing Yet Demand Drives Expansion

A government report for the Senate Agriculture Committee says the 1974 fertilizer shortage may not spark a major food crisis but a sharp boost in production is needed by decade's end. World nitrogen demand could reach 61 million tons by 1980, with capacity expansion required beyond 1978 forecasts. It notes potential gains from new plants in China and the Soviet Union amid tight global supply.

Future Farmers reap laurels in judging

Security Pacific Bank honored 41 students from six schools in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties for FFA final project excellence. Twenty earned gold certificates, the rest blue, judged by agri business specialists with state education officials. The Solvang banquet featured a slide show and local and county education leaders in attendance.

Buellton Fire Captain Beards Retirement Announced

Arthur Beard, long time Santa Barbara County Fire Station 31 captain in Buellton, will retire June 1 1974. He joined May 24 1954, became captain in 1956 and led Buellton unit since 1959. Beard fought the Refugio Fire of 1955 and later county blazes including Wellman Coyote and Romero. He and wife Ethel raise three children at 245 La Latta Place Buellton.
