Voters within Lompoc city limits will decide on a 500000 general obligation bond for fire facilities. The single issue election opens 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with 15 consolidated precincts and no tabulation boards in City Hall lobby.
A Nixon ordered commission recommends resuming oil production off California's coast to prevent future spills by pumping the Union Oil well dry. It estimates at least two years of pumping to deplete the Repetto Reservoir, with cautions about renewed drilling and potential leaks. County Supervisor George Clyde calls the plan premature and risky.
A fire in River Vale New Jersey killed 71 horses trapped inside a stable and show arena before dawn on Sunday arson is suspected. The blaze devastated the facility housing prize thoroughbreds and related equestrian events.
Acting president Alain Poher refused appeals to drop out and let Pompidou face Duclos in the June 15 runoff. Pompidou won 44.65 percent, Poher 23.31 percent, Duclos 21.08 percent in a 22.6 million vote.
The State Board of Equalization announced Lompoc recorded 33.52 million dollars in taxable sales for 1968 across 371 outlets. United Press International reports 558 people died in traffic accidents during the 78 hour Memorial Day weekend ending Sunday at 11 59 p m EDT. California led with 50 traffic deaths. Texas 38. Michigan 32. Ohio 30. Missouri 27.
