Coast Guard officer to explain offshore fishing laws at Fort Bragg

Lt. Gil Shaw travels from San Francisco to Fort Bragg to discuss international law on offshore fishing and to reassure that Russian trainers are monitored. A reward fund for capturing a Russian vessel has grown to 1,753.50 dollars, fueled by grocer Jack Azevedo who alleges 17 Soviet trawlers fish illegally within the 12 mile limit. He says the money will fund a soldier of fortune to capture a North Coast fisherman’s 40 foot boat, noting capturing a 300 foot trawler would be like arresting an elephant. Shaw affirms jurisdictions but says outside the limit the Coast Guard will not act. Azevedo attacks federal officials as weak, while the fund receives ongoing contributions including a 1,000 dollar gift from Southern California.
