City to mark 81st anniversary with Pioneer Days events

August will feature a Valleywide Pioneer Days program led by Lom poc Valley Chamber of Commerce. Activities include a Labor Day Weekend Pioneer Picnic at Ryan Park, historical window displays, period costumes, window display contests, a street square dance with local and visiting groups, and Barber Shop Quartet performances. Grass fires and a BMX crash report from Lompoc area

County firefighters contained two grass fires and the Lompoc City Fire Department responded to a third incident. A 12 year old boy sustained minor injuries after a bicycle collision near West Ocean Avenue and North X Street. Housing needs were aired by Sue Hill to aid new school personnel. An Air Force Minuteman II ICBM was launched from Vandenberg AFB to test weapon system components.

San Barbara Scouts Attend National Jamboree Opening

San Barbara County Boy Scouts joined the National Jamboree at Farragut State Park Idaho. The July ceremony featured a flag salute for 23 flags and 45 minutes of fireworks. Entertainment included Mickey Mouse Disneyland figures and remarks by Jesse Owens Lanny Ross and astronaut William Senior. Irving Feist as scout president spoke along with other scouting figures. Fifty thousand scouts and guests attended as 35 000 lit candles to symbolize that scouting lights up the world.

Helicopter shot down near Cambodia in Vietnam war
