Fifth Rabies Case Sparks Santa Barbara Outbreak Warning

The fifth rabies case in Santa Barbara County since April is reported by Health Officer Dr. Joseph Nardo, raising 1956 totals to ten. The last case was found July 14 on Fredensborg Road near Solvang, with Nardo noting that half of rabies cases in 18 years have occurred in the past three months.

Solvang developer wins condo plan but loses parking bid

Earl C. Petersen and Avco Savings secured board approval for a General Plan amendment to build a 48 unit condo on a 9.46 acre site along State Highway 246 after heightening density reductions from 72 to 56 to 48 units. In a separate afternoon hearing Petersen Development Corp failed to win permission for a commercial parking lot near a motel in a C-2 zone in Solvang. A search continued for 20 year old Chris Michael Stanley who jumped from Morro Rock at 1:40 a.m. as police, harbor patrol and Coast Guard scoured the area. Salvador Bermudes Mojarras of 312 W Laurel Ave was sentenced to 48 hours in county jail and a $750 fine for drunk driving, with license suspension for one year and a 30 day jail term suspended for two years probation.

Denholm denial and city actions on development

Harley Craig said Denholm plans mini warehouses for the CNN parcel. The commission granted a conditional use permit for Valley Chapel to build a church complex on C Street between Pine and Oak. Kranig elected chair and Fick vice chair. A convalescent hospital 74 beds was deemed in conformance with earlier plans for the Lompoc Hospital District project on Walnut Chestnut and Third Fourth. State NFIP discussion noted. city council may join for the sewer facility funding, which would make homeowners eligible for coverage.

Infant Bruce Hiss Graveside Services Held

Graveside services for infant Bruce Hiss are set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lompock Evergreen Cemetery. The infant died Sunday at Vandenberg Air Force Base Hospital, son of Sergeant and Mrs. Harry Hiss of 226 Poplar Street. Arrangements by Gregory- McPeek Mortuary.

County board votes on officer and judge pay raise plan

The personnel board proposed 33 percent boosts for constables and 22 percent for judges but Francis H Bdattie helped trim to the eight county average with no extra 8 percent this year. A new pay ordinance will be resubmitted. Frank J Frost opposed the board pay hike, arguing voters should decide. Critics suggest annexing Goleta Valley could reduce supervisors workload.

Funeral for Olivia Barnes Held at Vandenberg Base

Olivia Barnes age 15 died Sunday in a Santa Maria hospital. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 p.m. in the main chapel at Vandenberg Air Force Base with interment at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. She is survived by her parents, siblings, and grandparents. Friends may call at Gregory-McPeek Mortuary until 11 a.m. Thursday.
