William S. Barrett, 55, Lompoc’s director of public works and city engineer, resigns to become city engineer for Victorville. Since 1962 he modernized streets and sewers, including College Avenue and north east drainage, and built a city image with broad streets and major projects. He notes unfinished aims and urges a more favorable climate on the Santa Ynez River district board.

California grape boycott bill killed in Assembly panel

A bill to end the California table grape boycott was killed by an Assembly Agriculture Committee vote. Governor Reagan and Senator Murphy backed federal action rather than state law, while labor opposed the measure. A study was ordered to weigh farm labor issues during the legislative recess. In a separate item, Motel Six reports theft of a towel and soap from a hotel.

Boy Scouts Reach National Jamboree from Santa Barbara County

Ten scouts and their leaders from the Vandenberg AFB and Lompoc areas along with 31 others from Santa Barbara County have joined the National Boy Scouts Jamboree at Farragut State Park Idaho. Representatives include Robert McHargue Keith Bocksmith Terry Gampp er Roger Clements David Hunter Jerry Kowalik John Mabe Bob McHargue Lee Shoults and Russell Twine. Since arriving July 14 they have prepared camp and traded patches. the opening campfire was July 16. On the way to Farragut they visited Governor Reagan s office and Sutter s Fort.

Apollo 11 timetable shows rest periods and re-entry plan

The NASA flight plan lists a 10 hour rest for the crew on Wednesday with awakenings at 11 32 a m and a 15 minute color TV show at 7 02 p m. A final course correction is planned for Thursday morning before re entry as the ship nears the Pacific. Splashdown is at 12 51 p m followed by recovery aboard the USS Hornet and Nixon’s welcome.

California Senate moves toward DDT ban and pesticide reporting

The California Senate advanced a plan to phase out DDT over three years with a possible one year extension. It would require manufacturers and importers to report sales and use to the Department of Agriculture, with public access to the data. County officials would report too. farmers and retailers are exempt.
