Yanikian Receives Life Sentence In Turkish Diplomats Slay

Gourgen Yanikian was sentenced to life in prison for the 1973 murders of Mehmet Baydar and Bahadir Demir, Turkish diplomats in Los Angeles. The 78 year old denied a new trial, recounting memories of Armenian massacres and claiming the killings were to destroy two evils.

Base hosts sickle cell victims for meal and tour

Sixty five children with Sickle Cell disease, after an eight day camping trip in Cambria Pines, enjoyed a hot meal and base tour at Vandenberg. The event, supported by the Commander's Noncommissioned Officer Airman Advisory Council and the Sickle Cell Disease Research Foundation, included a $1000 donation and a visit to a Minuteman ICBM facsimile.

Off shore drilling permit hearings set for August

The California Lands Division plans three hearings in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara to decide whether to lift the offshore drilling moratorium within three miles. E N Gladish says findings will back a commission recommendation, following the Santa Barbara Channel spill. The first hearing is scheduled for August 14.

Santa Barbara County Fair Exhibits Show Strong Senior Entries

Exhibitors in clothing, baked goods, photography lead Senior Division entries at the Santa Barbara County Fair July 24 to 29. Senior Home Economics tops divisions with numerous entries. Preserved foods 390, baked goods 718, clothing 889. Horticulture sees Senior Vegetable 327 and Senior Fruit 167. Commercial vegetables 143, dry beans 15, strawberries 17. Photography totals 375 slides and 236 prints with 18 professional entries. Ceramics and China Painting have 56 entries.

Lawmakers travel far on taxpayer funded summer trips

State legislators and aides took 12 out of state trips from June to August totaling about $20,817. Trips covered gambling in Florida fairs and cable TV in Canada and ocean policy in Seattle. Several lawmakers attended conferences with multiple officials and consultants, with some funding requests and partial reimbursements noted.

Graveside rites for Henry McLean at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery

Graveside funeral services for Henry McLean 94 veteran ranchhand at San Julian Ranch will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Newhart Family Mortuary Santa Maria handles arrangements. He died Wednesday in a Santa Maria hospital after a long illness. He was born June 8 1879 in Manhattan New York. He moved to California then to Lompoc in 1926 and worked for Dibblee Poett on the San Julian Ranch until 1969 retirement. He was a lifelong bachelor and a 50 year member of the Lompoc Order of Eagles Aerie 1700. He has no known survivors. Rosary Sunday 7 30 p.m. Requiem Mass Monday 10 a.m. at St Raphael Church Santa Barbara.
