Cost of living up in June amid price freeze

The Labor Department reports a 0.7 percent June rise in the cost of living driven by higher food gasoline and fuel oil costs. Food prices jumped 1.7 percent from May to June and beef remains frozen until September 12. CPI stands at 132.4 in June, 5.9 percent above last year. Average weekly earnings rose to 145.13 with married workers with three dependents seeing a 0.1 percent decline in May.

Minier Cleared by Santa Barbara Grand Jury

The 1973 Santa Barbara County Grand Jury found District Attorney David D. Minier and former deputy A Barry Cappello free of wrongdoing after a year long probe into possible real estate dealings with Oakdale Manor and three men convicted of arson grand theft and conspiracy. Seven U.S. Savings bonds recovered yesterday from the Bank of America safety deposit box once checked by Mable Mae Beck age 78 of 528 North W Street. An unidentified bank employee observed the discovery during a recheck after Mrs Beck reported the loss last Wednesday.

Lompoc Rodeo Star Johnny McDonald Returns Home

Johnny McDonald 18 arrived at Lompoc Airport from Red Bluff after surgery for injuries from a rodeo in Folsom. Doctors removed his spleen and part of his pancreas. he moves with help and plans to return to rodeo earning as Cal Poly student and 1972 Lompoc High grad. His sister Judy notes recovery and confidence he will perform again.

Fresno Area Picket Arrests Hit 1,000 Workers

About 1,000 farm workers were arrested in Fresno Tulare and Kern counties after two days of mass actions by Cesar Chavezs United Farm Workers Union. Pickets protested renewed recognition by growers amid a long running dispute with the Teamsters who hold contracts with many grape growers.

Nixon refuses to release Watergate tapes to Senate panel
