Major recreation plan heads to County Planning Commission

New County Planning Director Linked to August Appointment

County Administrative Officer Raymond OD Johnson aims to name a new planning director by early August. Two department staffers, plus Planning Commission-backed Britt Johnson, are in the running as eight to nine candidates remain under review after Herbert Diverbiss agreed to vacate. An oral board may convene July 29 to narrow the field before county supervisors conduct interviews.

Lompoc Council Approves Weed Abatement Costs and Zoning Measures

The Lompoc City Council quickly moved through routine items including a weed abatement cost report showing sharp increases from 1970. Assistant Fire Chief Ronald Boggs noted higher costs for all lot sizes due to bids from three contractors. The council adopted two ordinances adding an Environmental Quality Committee and amending zoning to address nuisances. They also advanced a plan to convey surplus Route 1 land to the state, with six acres needed for the freeway, while delaying campground use study.

Woman reports alley assault in Lompoc

A Lompoc woman says a car with three men dragged her into the vehicle in a rear alley near her apartment at 5 30 pm. She was stabbed superficially in the chest and dumped from the car. She was taken to Lompoc Hospital with minor injuries. Police search for an old dark blue sedan.

UPI reports House Commerce Committee approved a bill forcing cloud seeding and other rainmaking plans to be filed with the Commerce Department with a ten thousand dollar penalty for noncompliance. The measure aims to keep states informed of weather modification plans.
