Cleaver Could Return If Free Pending Trial

Eldridge Cleaver says he would return to the United States the moment he is promised freedom pending his trial on an attempted murder charge. He spoke from Algiers during a Pan African festival and criticized California parole rules that kept him out of the U.S. He has been sought since the Oakland shooting on April 6, 1968, after fleeing a $50,000 bail. He criticized U.S. government agencies and said he would not cooperate with them. He declined to say where he has been recently, mentioning travel in eight countries. He condemned Yankee imperialism and said the FBI and others are seeking information about him. The piece notes publication details of The Lompoc Record.

Unusual Japanese farming and tour notes from Kyushu

A travel article describes farm methods seen near Kyoto and Mara. Peach trees on straw mounds with paper wrappers, espaliered pear branches, and pole-supported vegetables maximize space. Water-filled rice fields surround a fortress-like house, fire safety signs, and tree wrappings of straw and clay protect trunks from typhoons and winter cold.
