Open presidential primary bill advances in California

A California open presidential primary bill clears Assembly Elections Committee on a voice vote as Sen. Alfred E. Alquist pushes the measure for voter approval. Governor Reagan has vetoed this plan twice and opposes the bill though the constitutional amendment seeks public backing.

Union man booked in expert's death

Allan W. Daly a 30 year old computer specialist for the San Rafael Independent Journal died from two week old gunshot wounds in his San Francisco home. Police arrested Frank J Thurber 45 of San Bruno a union member linked to ITU. Also under arrest are Larry Rutherford and Richard Wamsley both 17 of San Bruno.

Hitch seeks expanded powers from UC faculty

University of California President Charles J. Hitch urged regents for new authority to oversee curricula across the nine campuses. He argued for control to ensure courses meet authorized names and content, signaling a shift from the Academic Senate which has supervised courses since 1920. Regent Edward W. Carter praised Hitch for challenging the faculty.

Four Record carrier boys earned Honor Awards after achieving a perfect business record for three months Apr 1 through Jun. Two others received Special Awards for June. DMV could revoke licenses for new car dealers fraud

Sacramento California Assembly Transportation Committee approved a bill to empower the Department of Motor Vehicles to revoke the licenses of new car dealers found guilty of repair fraud. The measure from Senator Gordon Cologne was sent to Ways and Means on a voice vote.

Air Force consolidates missile training at Vandenberg AFB

Two major commands merge the Missile Launch Officer Training Course from Chanute AFB with the Operational Readiness and Emergency War Order Training at Vandenberg AFB. The consolidation, begun May 27, will run both courses at Vandenberg, cut total training days, and save about 785000 dollars in year one with ongoing annual savings.

Police Find 47 Dead Cats At Reno Home

Welfare worker reported odors at the home of Myrtle Dominco. Police found 47 dead cats on the sinkboard and wrapped in papers, plus 20 live cats in good condition. Investigators sought the woman in connection with the case.
