Capt. Ian Patten and Fletcher Thomson, both ICCS officers, were released after 18 days in Viet Cong captivity. They said they were mistaken for Americans on an intelligence mission and endured forced marches and sleep deprivation while detained near Saigon.

Explosive Mailbox Incident Reported in Mission Hills
Barbara Kennedy of 3439 Via Dona said an explosive device damaged her mailbox Sunday. Sheriff's detectives are investigating. A .38 caliber revolver was reported stolen from Jimmie Dale Vincent’s home at 228 North F Street last Friday. In Santa Maria, Kid Day at the Santa Barbara County Fair runs July 24 and 27 with free admission for under 12 after 8 p.m. A 11 foot stiltman will entertain. John Donald Hopkins of Pacific Grove, 31, was arrested in Sacramento on 16 forgery counts plus burglary and grand theft tied to Solvang Buellton crimes. He was jailed in Lompoc with no bail due to a parole hold. Diana Clardy of Lompoc was named to the Dean’s List at Oklahoma Baptist University for spring semester. The Lompoc Beautification Commission will meet at City Hall tonight at 7:30 p.m. to discuss street trees and the Red Star Linen Service plant, plus nonagenda items.

Virginia Prison Uprising Quelled at State Prison Farm
State police cleared two cellblocks using tear gas and dogs and coaxed 114 inmates to surrender the remaining block ending a 12 hour uprising at the Virginia State Prison Farm west of Richmond. About 400 inmates seized three cellblocks and two dormitories after a fight with a guard, weapons crafted from beds and furniture.

Harry Leonard Batkin aged 61 died July 12 in Santa Barbara. Rosary was recited yesterday at Hader's Mortuary and mass said today at 9 a.m. Our Lady of Sorrow Church. He was born June 17, 1912 in Lompoc, son of the late Clarence Batkin family. He lived in Santa Barbara the past 30 years and is survived by wife Jennie Acquistapace Batkin, two sons Robert and Ronald, three sisters Ada Edman, Debbie Blocker, Harriett Rauch, six nieces Bille Jean Turri and others, and four nephews Edward Edman and others.
