Fire departments answer Six Calls
Lompoc and county fire crews responded to six calls this afternoon and morning with four deemed valid. A grass fire near Collier Ranch was actually smoke from the city fire, which burned seven acres on South R Street at 7 40 p.m. caused by fireworks near Dr. Erwin Holloway's property. A car fire near Hickory Avenue and G Street at 7 55 a.m. damaged a vehicle owned by George Palmer. County crews quickly controlled a half acre grass blaze at East Uranus Avenue in Vandenberg Village, traced to children playing with matches on land owned by Vandenberg Village Development Co. An earlier alarm about a vehicle fire with people trapped on Highway 246 east of Lompoc was canceled as occupants were safe.

County budget woes prompt adjustments and debate
The County Board of Supervisors prepared to resume hearings on July 13 at the County Administration Building after cutting several budgets. Medi-Cal costs were revised downward by 61 113 from 2 293 985, and small cuts were offset by adding two probation officers and extra court and hospital funding. Officials warn of risks under a state close end budget that could shift welfare and health costs to the county, with sharp debate over funding and state partnership.
