Fire sweeps 100 acres near Mission Hills threatening homes
County fire crews fought a 100 acre brush fire south of Mission Hills as high winds drove flames toward five ranger homes. About 18 residents evacuated while borate bombers dropped 3,700 gallons of suppressant. Ranger Jack Mason noted the damage but predicted recovery.

VAFB airman killed in accident
Airman Weylin Keith Howell 19 of Vandenberg Air Force Base died in a head on crash on Highway 166 east of Santa Maria. Buellton’s Gunnar Johansen 36 sustained major injuries and was taken to Marian Hospital. Two other drivers escaped injury.

Rebels to face firing squad after failed coup in Morocco

State workers may strike if pay boosts blocked
