U.S. command reports troops in Vietnam at 413,900, down 3,200 from the prior week and the lowest since February 1967. Officials plan further withdrawals totaling 150,000 by spring 1971, reducing combat strength to about two divisions.
Belfast reports three civilians killed as British troops search for arms in Falls Road area. Army opens special office to investigate looting and brutality claims amid weekend clashes. Police later corrected death toll. 57 civilians and 15 soldiers wounded. IRA-linked gunmen reportedly fired from rooftops during the Falls Road operation.
Charles Lawrence Grossini 40 of Lompoc died after being struck by a water truck at the Santa Maria Speedway. Witnesses say he stood behind the vehicle as it backed up, the rear wheel catching his leg and the front wheel rolling over his chest. The driver J T Simkins claimed no sight of him. He was pronounced dead at Marian Hospital. A burial and Rosary were planned with services in Lompoc and grave at Evergreen Cemetery. Sheriff’s investigators looked into the incident. He was ARCO station manager born April 27 1930 with a large family in Lompoc.
Israeli planes attacked Egyptian positions along the Suez Canal as Cairo reports Egyptian casualties near 2000 in a year. Reports say Ballah Gantara El Hirsh and El Tina were hit while Egypt claims several planes were downed by air defenses and SAM2 missiles. Sabotage strikes hit Gaza City’s sole ice cream plant injuring a woman and damaging machinery. a grenade attack wounded an Israeli bus passenger and a soldier on a separate incident.
Air Canada DC8 crashed near Toronto Airport, exploding in a barley field 100 yards from Mrs. Day’s farmhouse. All 108 aboard perished including 25 Americans and 16 Air Canada employees and families. The jetliner was en route from Montreal to Los Angeles and broke apart as it attempted to land.
Americans marked the holiday with lower than expected traffic deaths. A UPI tally counted 540 traffic fatalities from Thursday 6 p m to Sunday 11 59 p m, with California leading at 50 and no deaths in Alaska Delaware Utah or Washington DC.
Investigators sift sparse evidence in the bludgeon deaths of two young men found on a campus beach at the University of California at Santa Barbara. A third youth, Thomas M. Hayes, 19, remains hospitalized after surgery.
The Lompoc City Council will discuss an agreement with the Federal Correctional Institution and Vandenberg Disposal Co to share costs for an engineering study and facility design for regional sewage collection and treatment serving three areas. A committee from the three areas will select the study firm.
J Willard Marriott, organizer, says no plan to make the event annual despite nationwide input. President Nixon called to say the observance was great as up to 350000 attended the eve fireworks and gala. The Honor America Day Committee funded the celebration, costing hundreds of thousands, under a million, with many tourists remaining in the capital Sunday.
A Sunday headon crash on Interstate 40 about 70 miles east of Barstow left five dead. Victims include Patrick Koontz 31 and his wife Bonnie 29 and their 10 year old son Patrick Jr. One survivor, Susan Koontz 8, was hospitalized. Two other children died in the second vehicle and their parents from Colorado and Arizona were injured and taken to Twenty Nine Palms Hospital.
Rome reports the 100 day coalition led by Premier Mariano Rumor quits amid bickering among four parties and Socialist efforts to cooperate with the Communists at local levels. President Saragat asks Rumor to stay as caretaker as consultations begin. The 24 hour general strike looms by the Big Three unions after a months long reform push.
