Brush Fire Roars Along Ridge Behind Mission Hills Homes

A brush fire started around 10 a.m. on a ridge behind Calle Nueva in Mission Hills and burned toward open land. Six county units from Vanderman, Buellton aided by Lompoe fire crews fought the blaze amid shifting winds with no injuries or property damage reported by noon.

U S artillery hammers Cambodia after Vietnam pullout

U S artillery pounded targets inside Cambodia in the first days after withdrawing all forces from Cambodia officials say the fire will continue against identified targets aimed at disrupting Communist supply and communications lines. 1000 rounds were fired over two days and into today amid civilian casualties in the Mekong Delta and a mine incident near the DMZ.

A UPI report cites U.S. military strategists stating North Vietnamese forces moved about 30 percent from South Vietnam into Cambodia to stage rapid operations against the Cambodian army. The plan aims to exploit Cambodia's weaker forces during early training, as officials brief news executives.

Two Injured As Cycle Strikes Deer In Lompoc

Walter Charles Reedy and Linda Reedy, both residents of 117 North M Street, were treated and released from Lompoc Hospital after their motorcycle hit a deer at Ocean Avenue and R Street. A second accident at Lions Inn entrance left Robert Graber uninjured as his car damaged a palm tree following a pole strike.

High holiday death toll predicted for Fourth of July weekend

United Press International reports the National Safety Council estimates 560 to 660 traffic deaths and 27 000 to 31 000 disabling injuries over the four day Fourth of July period. Council president Howard Pyle urged defensive driving as the holiday begins and ends over the weekend.

Lompoc Eyes Highway Landscaping With Agencies

The City Council asked the Lom pops Beautification Committee and the Parks and Recreation Commission to study landscaping the main route between Lompoc and Vandenberg AFB. They consider joint financing from city county state and federal governments. Dustin W. Griffith noted California cities have succeeded in cross agency funding. The project would be a significant community contribution.
