Sprinter Wins Triple AAU Titles Amid Foot Injury
Willie Mae Nichols of Bakersfield claimed the 100 50 and 220 yard titles at the national AAU girls track meet in Daytona Florida despite a painful spike wound on her right foot. The 16 year old 5 foot 10 inch 152 pound sprinter clocked 10.8 in the 100 and 4.8 in the 50 yard dash tying American and AAU marks, and powered to 24.3 in the 220 yard race to tie the AAU record set six years earlier by Shirley Williams.
