Mass Air Sea Search For 200 On Lake Erie

The U S Coast Guard launched a major air and sea search for about 200 people believed aboard over 100 pleasure boats on Lake Erie after a weekend storm. Reports say eight people died and around 250 were injured as winds up to hurricane force lashed northern Ohio Friday night.

Fireworks crowds mark Fourth of July in Lompoc and Lakewood

A large crowd gathered at Huyck Stadium for Fourth of July celebrations with Lompoc firemen staging displays including a World War II battleship and a pledge by Red Skelton. Funds raised totaled about 2100 dollars with council support to back up the fireworks budget. In Ohio area storms toppled trees killing several people at Lakewood and Edgewater Park, while rescue efforts expanded across Lake Erie with Coast Guard, National Guard, and multiple boats and aircraft.

Highway death toll tops 256 during holiday period

A United Press International tally at 8 a.m. PDT reported 256 people killed in traffic accidents since the holiday period began at 6 p.m. Thursday. Texas led with 22 deaths, followed by California 21, Michigan 19, Ohio 16, and Georgia 15, with totals of 373 overall.

Tshombe buried in Brussels

Former Congo premier Moise Tshombe, 49, was buried today in a Brussels suburb after dying of a heart attack in Algiers. His sons sobbed as mourners gathered at Etterbeek Cemetery while authorities refused burial in the Congo, hoping for a later interment there.

Man booked for drunk driving aboard a horse

LUDINGTON Mich. electronics repairman Victor Jackson attempted to sail Lake Michigan in a souped up iron bathtub dubbed Vic's Folly. Lompoc and central coast expect fog tonight and morning with partial clearing afternoons. Inland stays fair and warm with highs in the upper 60s and a low around the 50s. Tidal highs reach 3.7 to 5.3 feet on Sunday and Monday with lows near 1.1 to 1.4 feet.
