About 3,000 demonstrators gathered at the UCSB administration building on Friday to protest the firing of assistant anthropology professor William Allen. Security forces formed a blockade and there were only isolated scuffles. classes ran as usual with no arrests.
All U S railroads ordered a coast to coast stoppage starting Saturday night in response to a strike against Union Pacific. The National Railroad Conference said passenger and freight runs would halt, with some existing services ending by 9 43 p m in Philadelphia and the 7 30 p m departure from Washington. The move follows a four shop union stalemate and to back demands from the Defense Department for priority Vietnam materiel transport, with GM warning of widespread disruption. The strike marks the first national rail lockout and faces possible White House talks as Labor Secretary Shultz seeks a delay.
The Air Force dropped objections to civil requests for a harbor refuge on Cojo Bay’s eastern shore. Officials say civilian development could follow, with a need to control land use on about 65 000 acres southeast of Vandenberg AFB to support space launch operations. Governor Reagan said state funds are allocated to start the projects.
North Vietnam moved a 95A regiment into the Mekong Delta near Saigon, joining up to 10 000 other troops. The delta, vital for rice and population, could test the Vietnamsization policy as combat shifts toward South Vietnamese forces.
