Plan to Build Early Warning System Pushed in Flood Valley

Government aid including heavy equipment and manpower will begin clearing flood ravaged lands in the Valley by next week. County Supervisor Beattie said 6,000 acres were flooded with 4,000 needing debris removal as volunteers, Lompoc officials, and FFA members mobilize for a large cleanup and warning-system push.

Marines to Build Bailey Bridges at Vandenberg

Advanced elements of the Fifth Marine Division arrive at Vandenberg Air Force Base from Camp Pendleton to erect a Bailey type one way bridge on Floradale Avenue replacing a washed out Federal Correctional Institution structure. A second two way Bailey bridge at the 13th Street extension is planned for Feb 25 with an advanced party of ten Marines and a 50 man convoy proceeding via Los Angeles. Demolition of Surf bridge sections begins Monday under U S Corps of Engineers supervision with completion expected by mid February.

Nixon Visits Rubble District in Washington to Pledge Action

President Nixon toured the Negro ghetto district of Washington and viewed rubble from last April’s riots. He promised Congress 1,000 to 2,000 police and 10 to 15 judges, with bail reform and tougher corrections, while housing secretary Romney and Mayor Washington outlined rebuilding for two blocks in Northwest Washington.

Oil slick threatens Rincon Beach as spill spreads

A 17 by 8 mile oil slick reached Rincon Beach with 21,000 gallons daily from a Union Oil offshore drill near Carpinteria. Coast Guard aircraft report heavy concentrations four by twelve miles SW from the platform. Local groups urge halting Santa Barbara Channel oil operations and dispersant use is disputed by wildlife advocates.
