Saigon battle sees 1500 U S troops trap 100 Communist
About 1,500 American infantrymen surrounded a Communist company near Saigon as helicopter gunships fighter bombers and artillery attacked. The unit of about 100 hid in spider holes near the rice paddies ten miles southwest of Saigon. Ten Communists were killed. U.S. casualties were light. Tet attack fears were echoed by Lt. Gen. Do Cao Tri who expected large scale Communist assaults between now and the February 17 holiday with thousands of troops already in the region. He cautioned that intelligence about two regiments moving toward the capital on Feb. 5 was unconfirmed.

He stressed Middle East concerns, potential alternatives to UN diplomacy, nuanced views on Saigon withdrawal, and that arms talks could proceed with a notion of sufficiency rather than strict superiority. He hinted at a forthcoming major legislative program to be delivered possibly in stages.
