Final legacy left by Senator Russell in 1971

Washington UPI reports Senator Richard B. Russell died at 2 25 p m and left a final political legacy. His death shifted the Senate leadership vote, elevating Robert C Byrd over Edward M Kennedy by a secret ballot of 31 24, with Russell's proxy decisive for Byrd's narrow win.

Nation's Weather Warmth Returns Across the South

United Press International reports a nationwide warmup after a cold spell in the South. A frontal system spanned from New England to Texas bringing precipitation. Hazardous driving warnings were posted in southwestern Virginia and high elevations of northeast Tennessee. Snow and sleet iced bridges and slick surfaces with light snow in parts of Pennsylvania New York and New England. Flurries near the Great Lakes and rain along the Washington coast marked western weather.

Simple rites slated for Sen. Russell

Richard Brevard Russell dies at Walter Reed from a respiratory infection linked to emphysema. The 37 year Senate veteran will be buried in Georgia after a brief Andrews AFB ceremony aboard Air Force One. His body lies in state in the Georgia capitol rotunda then burial in Russell Memorial Park in Winder. Donations to Thornwell Orphanage are requested in lieu of flowers. Governor Carter may appoint Ernest Vandiver to fill the unexpired term.

Intelsat 4 satellite set for 7:10 p.m. launch

A 142-ton, 13.5 million Intelsat 4 satellite, first of eight for Comsat and partners, will launch at 7:10 p.m. EST aboard a Atlas Centaur rocket from Cape Kennedy. The nose cone design changes follow a November observatory failure, with Comsat insuring eight launches under a two mission deductible plan. NATO will follow on a Delta rocket January 27.
