Hickel rejects two week oil drilling halt request
Interior Secretary Hickel refused a Californians request to suspend oil drilling in the Santa Barbara Channel for two weeks to test seepage impact. Dr. Pecora calls the idea foolish and says halting could worsen seepage while suggesting a broader sanctuary across the channel. Sierra Club president Phillip Berry and GO O leader Lois Sidenberg urge suspension to test theory. The seepage stems from a channel well blowout a year earlier.
