Nine men buried in Canyonville mudslide during Northwest floods

Rescuers with heavy equipment search for nine men trapped in a Canyonville mudslide while statewide floods ease. Two children swept away in California, others missing along Rogue River and in a Northern California pond. Weather service warns of another storm from Alaska. Damage totals rise across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and California. Local officials report river evacuations and continuing cleanup as warnings persist.

Residents to discuss Miguelito Channel fencing tonight

A 7:30 p.m. PTA meeting at Miguelito School in Lompoc will discuss fencing the 2.9 mile Miguelito Channel. City Councilman Sol Lefkowitz and flood control chief James Stubbhner are expected to attend amid safety concerns after a 12 year old boy was injured last December.

Joy ride crash ends with injuries in Oxnard

A 13 year old borrowed a car to take his sisters aged 7 and 6 on a joy ride in Oxnard. The trio, seen at 9:30 p.m. on Laurel Avenue at speeds up to 50 mph, lost control at Y Street and Laurel, hitting a tree. They suffered minor injuries and were turned over to juvenile authorities.

Israel Egypt Reach Suez Withdrawal Accord

President Nixon announced that Henry Kissinger secured a disengagement agreement between Israel and Egypt along the Suez Canal front. The cease-fire is to be signed at Kilometer 101 on the Cairo Suez road, with ratification expected in Jerusalem Cairo and Washington.

Weil to retire from city post in Lompoc

David L. Weil will retire from his 11 year stint as Lompoc purchasing agent in March. Harvey E. Cargill, current Santa Maria purchasing agent, will assume the role on February 1. Weil plans travel with his wife and may pursue a quieter life after 65.

Four charged in murder of TV star Akeman in Tennessee

Four men including three Brown brothers and a cousin were arrested on two counts each of murder for killing David Stringbean Akeman, a Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw star, and his wife John A Brown and Marvin D Brown, while Charles and Roy Brown face additional charges as accessories and for stolen property. The suspects, raised in Greenbrier, were linked to the Akeman farm home where the shooting occurred on November 11 after Akeman returned from a night performance.
