Lompoc Names Paul Thompson New City Librarian

Bespectacled Paul Francis Thompson becomes Lompoc’s new city librarian, taking the post after Marie Wald’s resignation. He plans moving the library to a new East North Avenue facility next month, aims to expand public use spaces, exhibit programs, and book gifts while balancing school and adult education roles. Thompson, a 42 year old Iowa native with Army service, previously led Turlock’s library.

Beautification awards set for January 29 luncheon

Mayor Robert MacClure will award 1968 monthly City Beautification certificates at a Jan 29 luncheon at Loop's Restaurant honoring homeowners and merchants for past year efforts. Santa Barbara speaker Richard Taylor, landscape design lead on Pioneer Park and city library, will feature at the event.

Nuclear Tests Announced in Nevada Desert

Two nuclear devices were triggered under the Nevada desert within a half hour. A slight radioactivity reading appeared at one site, traced to a 810 foot shaft after the low yield device detonated at the bottom, the Atomic Energy Commission said.

Flower Festival Theme Contest Deadline Nears

Entries for the 1969 Flower Festival theme contest must be mailed or delivered to the Chamber of Commerce in Lompoc by January 24. Open to all persons, up to seven words per theme, judging based on central theme adaptability. A trophy and honorary parade position await the winner, with final notice by January 31.

SAS DC8 Crash Kills 15 After Gear Trouble Radio Transcript Cited

Investigators probe SAS Flight 933 which crashed into the sea near Malibu after radar loss and bad weather. The DC8 broke apart eight miles off shore. 15 dead, 12 of 29 survivors hospitalized. Copilot Ingvar Hansson and Captain Kenneth Davies, both of Sweden, are questioned as clues like instrument failure are considered. Salvage crews search a 30 mile sector for the tail and cockpit recorders while Navy minesweepers use metal detectors.

President Johnson to Vacation at Palm Springs Ranch Home

President Johnson plans a February vacation at a Spanish style ranch in Palm Springs with Lady Bird. The house, in a quiet neighborhood, was once Moss Hart's and Kitty Carlisle’s and sits near El Dorado golf courses. The stay follows the resort’s history as a favorite presidential retreat and notes Eisenhower’s prior winters nearby.

Two Lompoc men aboard Enterprise escape unharmed

Two Lompoc seamen aboard the USS Enterprise were unhurt after a fiery explosion 75 miles southeast of Pearl Harbor. Seaman David Sanders and USM Corporal David Bouslaugh were alerted by family. Bouslaugh aided with rescue on the flight deck. The casualty toll stood at 24 dead, one missing, 85 injured as investigators pursued the blast’s cause.
