Three Soviet cosmonauts return to earth after historic linkup

Three Soviet cosmonauts landed on the central Asian steppes aboard Soyuz 4 after a space linkup with Soyuz 5. The crew, greeted by helicopter teams, endured minus 31 degree cold and celebrated the first in orbit space platform. Boris Volynov remained aboard Soyuz 5 on a separate mission, completing his 35th Earth orbit and expected to land Saturday.

Downed pilot walks out of Los Padres area

A 34 year old Canoga Park student pilot J L Yates survived 30 hours after a mid air crash near Noon Peak in the Los Padres National Forest. He walked to a Summerland home where Greg Skinner ferried him to Cottage Hospital Santa Barbara in satisfactory condition.

Regents meeting spurs student protest in Berkeley

A coalition of seven student groups planned a mass demonstration outside University Hall as the UC Board of Regents met. They backed San Francisco State College strikes, called for Reagan era campus reform, and urged amnesty for demonstrators. The Regents met privately with heavy police. no protesters appeared.

Featherbedding Issue May Trigger Nationwide Rail Strike

Federal officials abandoned mediation in a dispute between railroads and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen over assigning a fireman to each diesel locomotive. The National Mediation Board proposed binding arbitration, which the railroads support, while the union opposes it. John P. Hiltz Jr. warned the carriers will use every weapon to oppose the wage demand.
