Red troops ambush truck convoy near Saigon

UPI reports communist forces hit a mile long U S truck convoy northwest of Saigon with 115 enemy dead and eight Americans killed. A second convoy eight miles away was also ambushed as allied forces fend off Viet Cong in Tay Ninh Cu Chi area. In Laos, attackers overran an ammunition depot near Vientiane, blasting 2000 tons of munitions. General Tri said Saigon forces can take the lead with allies in the fight against Viet Cong.

Johnson Farewell Address Highlights Today

Washington UPI reports highlights of President Johnson's farewell state of the union. He cites better prospects for peace with North Vietnam, urges extending the 10 percent income tax surcharge, and outlines a $2.4 billion surplus this year and $3.4 billion next year. The plan calls for urban rehab, 500000 new housing starts, more Social Security job training, police training funding, a gun law, postal reorganization, and higher congressional salaries. He urges ratification of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty and renewed disarmament talks with the Soviet Union. Nixon seeks bipartisan support to carry through with Johnson era commitments.

Demos Seek Revolt in California Senate

A group of Democratic senators led by George Moscone and James Mills won floor leadership amid calls to transform the nonpartisan Senate into a partisan arena. They deny aiming to oust Pro Tem Burns and foresee a mid-session vote on rules changes as Republicans retain a 40 member edge. The state faces a Feb 25 special election to fill a Contra Costa seat after Senator Miller’s death.

Governor acts to block talks with striking professors

The governor takes steps to block negotiations by the state board of college trustees with striking professors. Drummond appoints Ralph N. Drummond to the Monterey County superior court bench. The Republican convention date is moved to the fourth Sunday in January to fit presidential inauguration. Other actions include reducing Assembly committees from 25 to 21 and naming a seven member board for San Francisco State College.

Kidnapped Paola McGinnis Found Safe In Whittier

Not all Pueblo crew will testify at court of inquiry

At Coronado California Navy spokesmen say many of the 82 Pueblo survivors will skip testimony at the court of inquiry opening Monday. A three man panel led by Capt William R Newsome screened about half the survivors to pick witnesses. The inquiry will assess Pueblo capture and the ship's dual roles.
