Alioto Withdraws From California Governor Race

Lompoc delays two agricultural preserves near city limits

County supervisors delay final approval on two preserves west of Lompoc due to a required 30 day notice to the city. Lewis and Beattie are among applicants. Beattie abstained. Notices were sent December 31, with action postponed to February 2. The board also approved preserves for Clyde Gauld and Frances S Knowles and a Contaglia Brothers parcel in Los Alamos. The Yitas Ranch preserve spans about 2700 acres, completing the San Julian Ranch area.

Nigerians Celebrate Victory Amid Anti-Catholic Unrest in Lagos

New city public works director begins service in Lompoc

F K Ken Dawson started as Lompoc public works director city engineer, moving from Sacramento where he led engineering and managed Koebig and Koebig Inc. He will oversee engineering traffic building regulations streets and sanitation and aims to focus on administrative duties. His family plans to relocate, leasing a home at 304 Princeton Place.

Protests greet Agnew in Australia amid security

Vice President Spiro Agnew arrives in Canberra on his 11 nation Asia tour. Protesters hurl tomatoes at his unoccupied limousine while he lays a wreath at the war memorial. Police remove five demonstrators as heavy security surrounds the 43 hour stay. Agnew urges Pacific nations to lead in aiding less developed neighbors.

Minier files complaint amid contempt threat over oil spill

Santa Barbara County District Attorney David Milner filed a 343 count criminal complaint against Union Oil Mobil Texaco and Gulf Oil alleging pollution of state waters in the Santa Barbara Channel beginning February 1969. He acted to beat the one year statute of limitations despite a federal injunction currently under appeal. Milner predicted oil firms would seek contempt sanctions but said he could not delay prosecution any longer.

Civil defense plan unites Lompoe community

Editor notes this is the second in a series on reorganizing Lompoe's Civil Defense. The plan, ten years old, is being updated by City Administrator Gene Wahlers and Fire Chief John Baker to unite residents in disaster response across welfare, health, law, engineering, fire and supply services with cooperation from schools, Red Cross, private groups and federal agencies.
