Lompoc Taxable Sales Rise in 1969 Third Quarter

Lompoc taxable sales climbed in the July through September period of 1969 totaling 8 246 000 but remained below the 1968 third quarter level of 8 447 000. County totals rose from 113 198 000 in 1968 to 121 723 000 this year with Lompoc’s peak 9 798 000 set in 1968 Q4. Santa Maria reported 26 484 000 for 1969 Q3.

Biafran War Ends as Chief of Staff Surrenders

The Nigerian High Commission in London announced the Biafran chief of staff surrendered ending 31 months of civil war that killed over a million Ibo and caused mass hunger fears. Effiong signaled peace talks while Ojukwu sought cease fire from a neutral country. Pope Paul VI urged action to prevent further bloodshed as relief efforts scrambled to avert famine.

High court rejects hearing on de facto segregation

The Supreme Court refused to hear arguments that de facto school segregation may be permitted in the South if caused by housing patterns. The ruling leaves in place a circuit court decision requiring Indianola Mississippi to redraw attendance zones or adopt another plan to achieve integration. The Ohio brief order also covered cases on anti Communist laws and a Cleveland nondiscrimination bid in construction.

Nixon orders 10 million aid package for Biafrans

President Nixon ordered an extra 10 million in food and medical supplies for starving Biafrans, directed to the eastern area where Nigerian forces advanced. He spoke by phone with British Prime Minister Wilson and cabled Maj. Gen. Gowon to inform him of the help.

Laird Doubts Major Tet Offensive by North Vietnam

Oil Tank Farm Blast Damages $150000 Near Santa Maria

A Sunday night explosion at an oil tank farm east of Lake Marie Estates, north of East Clark Road, caused about $150,000 in damage. Four county pumpers and 20 firefighters contained the blaze. no injuries were reported. Three 2,000 gallon tanks, a pump unit, an office, lines, and crude oil were harmed. The fire was controlled before 10 p.m. by units from Santa Maria Orcutt stations 21 22 and 23.

Overcast and foggy night and morning, then mostly sunny afternoons today and Tuesday. Highs in the low 60s, nights near 50. Light winds. Tuesday tides reach 4.9 feet at 2:32 a.m. and 3.7 feet at 2:20 p.m. Low tides are 1.6 feet at 8:50 a.m. and 1.0 feet at 8:26 p.m.

Reserve Center on agenda of school board

Lompoc Unified trustees plan to consider buying the old U S Army Reserve Center on Ocean Avenue for a continuation school. The site now houses the Lompoc Valley Boys Club and lies west of the County Housing Authority and post office. Federal surplus status and disposal proposals drive the item with housing authority and city interest noted. The board will also nominate James Foster and Camille Wilde to the Vocational Education Advisory Committee and discuss holding the January 27 meeting at Vandenberg Elementary School.
