Lodge booed from Stanford stage amid antiwar protests

Veteran U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge was booed and shouted down at Stanford University as 800 in the Dinkelspiel crowd grew confrontational. He postponed his remarks and delivered the speech later to about 150 in Cummings Auditorium with organizers apologizing for the disruption.

State final voting figures show Reagan win and Tunney gain

Official final tabulations by Secretary of State Edmund G Brown Jr record Ronald Reagan defeating Jess Unruh by 501057 votes 52.8 to 45.1 percent. Tunney unseats George Murphy 618941 votes 53.9 to 44.3 percent. Other races include Younger narrowly ahead over O’Brien and Riles becoming California’s first statewide elected black official. Proposition 18 fails 45.9 to 54.1 percent.

Nixon condemns bombing of Soviet facilities in U S

Bethlehem Steel to raise construction and shipbuilding steel prices

Bethlehem Steel Corp the nations second largest steel maker plans to raise construction and shipbuilding steel prices by about 11 percent and end a price freezing practice the company announced on Monday Prices on structural steel will rise $16 a ton effective February 16 and carbon sheets by $17 a ton on March 1 These products account for roughly 15 of U S shipments Other majors such as U S Steel and Inland Steel had no comment Prices on other steel products are expected to rise later this year Industry sources said profits narrowed in 1970 despite earlier price hikes

Indians Face Stealing of Federal Education Funds

A NAACP Fund and Harvard Center study reports 31 Indians in eight states say local and state officials divert federal Indian education money to general expenses and lower property taxes for non Indians. The 162 page report argues such misuses violate the 1965 ESEA the 1934 Johnson O Malley Act and the impact aid statutes. It asserts Indians receive the worst education with dropout rates twice and 25 percent functionally illiterate.

Freighter Brandenburg Sinks After Hitting Texaco Caribbean Wreck

A German freighter Brandenburg struck the wreck of the tanker Texaco Caribbean in the English Channel and sank within two minutes. Coast Guard said six bodies recovered, 12 crew missing, fourteen survivors rescued to Folkestone Hospital. The Texaco Caribbean and Paracas collision left the Panamanian tanker damaged but afloat. seven Italian crew and the captain from the Texaco Caribbean were unaccounted for.
