Union Oil outlines third platform drilling plans in Santa Barbara
Union Oil officials testified at an Interior Department hearing in Santa Barbara that a proposed third platform would host 59 wells and a yearlong drilling program. The company already operates two platforms with five producing wells. A capacity audience of over 200 crowded the hearing room, with more than 50 told to leave by the fire marshal. Interior spokeman Jack Horton said a full environmental impact statement would be prepared after today and tomorrow’s testimony. Platform designer Richard Hauber said the rigs can withstand hurricane winds and strong earthquakes. County water officials discussed a desalting plant feasibility in San Luis Obispo County if water costs are favorable, noting the Diablo Canyon site was selected for the potential nation’s largest desalination facility. An already funded feasibility study is due next year to evaluate market potential for the Santa Barbara–San Luis Obispo–Ventura area.
