Kissinger with renewed urgency seeks to salvage Middle East talks

United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger flew to the Middle East with a renewed sense of urgency to salvage faltering Israel Egypt troop withdrawal negotiations. Egypt rejected a reported withdrawal plan. artillery duels and casualties were reported along the Suez Canal front as Syria shelled Israeli positions on the Golan Heights. Kissinger planned talks in Madrid and Aswan with Sadat and Meir, with possible visits to Jordan and Saudi Arabia. He declined to elaborate on the crisis during stopovers, while Egyptian editor Heikal, close to Sadat, rejected the Israeli proposals.
