Bitter winter storm leaves thousands without power across Southeast

A longstanding January blizzard paralyses the Atlanta area with eight deaths and 75 000 outages. Police hunt for second sniper after New Orleans hotel siege

Police believe a second sniper may have escaped from the Howard Johnson Hotel as a 24 hour siege ended. A 50 block area was cleared, 300 rooms searched with no trace found. Six people died, including a Virginia couple, as officers and citizens faced fear and quiet streets.

Decreasing rain or showers today then clearing tonight with patchy fog. Wednesday brings increasing clouds and a chance of rain late. Highs in the 50s, lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Water pollution funds priorities set for 1972 73

The State Water Resources Control Board announced priorities for allocating 196 million in federal funds and 33 million in state funds for water pollution projects in 1972 73. Top priority targets cease and desist cases, second priority seeks facilities upgrades, with wider aims including regional sewer plans in Lompoc.

Beattie Named Chairman As New Board Members Sworn In

The Board of Supervisors sworn in two new members and reorganized with Francis H. Beattie of Lompoc named chairman for 1973. James Slater and Frank Frost joined from Goleta Valley and Santa Barbara, replacing retiring supervisors. New vice chairman is Charles F. Catterlin, with Tunnell and Beattie reshuffling other posts. New park and planning appointees include the first women on the park commission and several reassignments.

Reagan nominates William P. Clark Jr. to California Supreme Court

Gov. Ronald Reagan names Appellate Court Justice William P. Clark Jr. as the new California Supreme Court justice to replace the late Raymond E. Peters. Clark, 41, has served as a trial judge and appellate justice and heads from the San Luis Obispo ranch community of Shandon after prior appointments by Reagan to the Court of Appeals and Superior Court. The nomination awaits confirmation by the Commission on Judicial Appointments amid past opposition from the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association.
