Santa Barbara Grand Jury Begins Special Session Over Final Report

The 1972 Santa Barbara County Grand Jury meets in special session to prepare its potentially controversial final report to Presiding Superior Judge Floyd Dodson. The panel, led by M. G. Sues, argues for public release of an interim report on the McAlpine autopsy case amid disputes over censorship and court access. Downgraded by authorities and contested by Sheriff John W. Carpenter, the case centers on alleged irregularities and political friction with the Board of Supervisors and County Counsel. The final report is due at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Re district proposal continued by county Board of Supervisors

The Board voted unanimously to delay the re district plan for a month to Feb 5 amid a large audience opposing boundary changes. The plan would shift 20 000 residents from the Third District to the Second and Fourth, with Goleta Valley placed in the Third. Protests and slow action dominated the session as the committee had previously favored moving Santa Ynez Valley, Hope Ranch, Buellton areas, and shifting Supervisor Grant.
