Essex the Sniper Deaths End in New Orleans Hotel Roof
Mark James Robert Essex, 23, once a peaceful Kansas youth, became a bitter militant and carried out a rooftop sniper spree at the Howard Johnson Hotel in downtown New Orleans. Police say he fired on guests and firemen, killed a couple on their honeymoon and an assistant manager, with six killed and around 20 wounded before he was shot down by a Marine helicopter crew. Police found his body on the roof after dawn.
