Third storm threatens Los Angeles as floods loom

Assessor's Office Told to Overhaul Petroleum Tax Appraisals

Santa Barbara county votes to consolidate clerk and recorder offices

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved on first reading a plan to merge the county clerk and county recorder offices and abolish the separate offices by end of 1974. The move could trigger a June primary battle for the combined $25,000 annually post between Howard C. Menzel and Rita van Buskirk, each with salaries around $23,803 and $21,543 respectively. A study cited potential savings and merged operations, with net savings of about $20,346 if the merger eliminates certain assistant posts. The consolidation faces final approval next week and could affect 51 clerk positions and 20 recorder positions.
