Santa Barbara county votes to consolidate clerk and recorder offices
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved on first reading a plan to merge the county clerk and county recorder offices and abolish the separate offices by end of 1974. The move could trigger a June primary battle for the combined $25,000 annually post between Howard C. Menzel and Rita van Buskirk, each with salaries around $23,803 and $21,543 respectively. A study cited potential savings and merged operations, with net savings of about $20,346 if the merger eliminates certain assistant posts. The consolidation faces final approval next week and could affect 51 clerk positions and 20 recorder positions.
