Students and teachers strike as SF State opens

San Francisco State College reopened amid militant student and union teacher pickets. The American Federation of Teachers representing 350 of 1,150 faculty voted to strike after Governor Reagan pledged to keep the campus open. Pickets at six entrances clashed with students and police while demands for reforms and a black studies program circulated.

Vance Ends Candidacy For Lompoc School Board Seat

George Vance announced he will not seek re election to the Lompoc Unified School District Board of Trustees. He was appointed in July 1967 to fill an unexpired term and cites personal business as preventing further service. Two seats are up April 15 with Marjorie Thomas seeking to retain her seat. Thomas was appointed in December 1966 to fill for Martha Negus who resigned due to poor health and is now board president. Candidates must file by February 20. Remaining trustees are Beattie Helman and Nagle, with Helman having needed riot police during clashes in December. The wider college dispute drew mediation with Mayor Alioto and a 36 member committee.
