Chief Justice Roger J. Traynor resigns under 70th birthday rule to teach at the University of Virginia. Governor Reagan will name a successor and possibly a new Chief Justice, with party balance possibly shifting to three Republicans and four Democrats on the California Supreme Court.

Allison Eastland Named Dimes Poster Girl in Santa Barbara

Allison Eastland four-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbert Eastland of Vandenberg Air Force Base is Santa Barbara County’s poster girl for the March of Dimes campaign. She is multi handicapped with hearing loss vision impairment a congenital heart condition and cerebral palsy. Vaccination and a local education drive are highlighted as part of the Mothers March for the January 31 event in Lompoc with volunteer outreach led by Janet Hoffmeister.

O'Connell denies wrong in alleged fee-split

Former Washington state Attorney General John O'Connell, under state scrutiny for alleged referral fees with San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, says he has done nothing wrong. He describes public opinion as polluted and criticizes Attorney General Slade Gorton for provoking possible litigation.

Mary Streeter obituary graveside services Tuesday

Mary Olive Streeter 92 a pioneer Santa Rita resident died Tuesday in Santa Barbara. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery with McPeek Family Mortuary in charge. Born 1877 in Potter Valley she moved to Santa Rita in 1885 and later managed ranch properties. Surviving nieces and nephews include Mrs Laris Kolding Patterson California and Mrs Mildred Franzina Santa Ynez among others.

Israeli commandos seize 7 ton radar station in raid near Suez

Israeli commandos raided Ras Gharib south of the Suez entrance and hauled away a 7 ton Soviet built radar station. The operation left four Egyptians captured and two killed, with jets providing cover as the station and operators were moved to Israeli held territory.

Navy may sink bomb laden freighter off Pearl Harbor

Navy officials awaited Pentagon orders on sinking the 459 foot freighter SS Badger State drifting 1,509 miles from Hawaii with fires burning and 26 crew presumed dead. The ship loaded with bombs and rockets was abandoned after Christmas while en route to Vietnam. A fleet spokesman said no sinking method had been decided yet, with a ruling expected from Adm. Moorer's office.

Documentary on Stabbing Seen in Rolling Stones Concert Film

Alameda County officers say a sequence showing the fatal stabbing of an 18 year old at the Rolling Stones concert near Livermore appears in a film by Albert and David Maysles. The Dec 6 show drew about 300000 people and featured major American groups but ended in four deaths and significant property damage.

The widow of Frederico Alez Quinionez who died in a car crash last Sunday night is Paula, not Monica as reported. A requiem mass is set for Monday at 9 a.m. at La Purísima Church in Lompoc, with survivor Joseph, a brother, also of Lompoc.

Bids to Open on Bonds in Lompoc and Golaeta Districts

The Board of Supervisors will open bids Monday morning for 447000 in Lompoc Unified School District bonds and 250000 in Goleto Union School District bonds. Bids to be opened at 9 30 a.m. at the start of the all day session in the County Administration Building.

Search continues for rapist murderer Maine at prison grounds

The search for Leonard E. Maine, a convicted rapist murderer, centers on the Deve! Vocational Institution grounds. Guards expect he may hide inside the 700 acre prison, after his disappearance on Wednesday. Maine, 21, is serving 10 years to life for the 1967 slaying of Timothy Luce and for kidnap rape and shooting of Luce's girlfriend Susan Bartolomei. Another youth from Pittville, Thomas E. Braun, 21, is on Death Row at San Quentin for first degree murder in the Luce case.

Bills too high leave for Holland

John van der Sande, kidney patient, leaves Los Angeles with his wife Jeanette and two children for the Netherlands after racking up $25,000 in medical bills since starting kidney dialysis March 15. They will fly on a charter to Amsterdam, funded by the sale of their Arcadia home worth $34,900 and donations from friends.

Gordon Says He Could Ride With Russian Astronaut

Seattle visit by Apollo 12 crew Richard F. Gordon Jr. and fellow astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean featured questions on cooperation with the Soviet Union. Gordon said a trustful Russian partner could ride in space, noting competition drives progress and stressing no hostility to cooperation. Segregationist Pushes Private School System in Mississippi

Mississippi segregation spokesman Jimmy Swan urged a Friday rally that only a statewide private school system can shield children from integration. He claimed the Supreme Court ruling to desegregate is a Communist plot to take control of children. Williams proposed a $1 million fund to mount desegregation suits while Swan vowed to build private education foundations across Jackson and the state.
