Detroit New Year raids crack wide gambling ring

Federal officials said New Year raids in Michigan and Las Vegas cracked a highly lucrative gambling operation. Eleven people were searched in Detroit including former St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Dizzy Dean who said no connection. U S attorney James Brickley vowed a vigorous investigation into Dean and other sports figures as agents seized over 600000 dollars in cash and cashier’s checks along with gambling paraphernalia.

Black Hills buried under four foot snow storm

The Black Hills of South Dakota were blanketed by four feet of snow with more falling at about one inch per hour. The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported all Lead Deadwood area roads blocked and no travel possible. Snow extended from the Rockies to the Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley and Appalachians with additional reports across New Mexico and Texas. Temperatures plunged below zero in ten states, with subfreezing readings to the Florida Panhandle. A California rescue of seven children followed a capsized boat near El Porto Beach Park as rescuers searched for Albert Sexton and five others. The blizzard eased but heavy snow persisted while ice glaze formed across western states and the Northeast.

Guerrillas attack Allied bivouac near Saigon and border

Guerrilla soldiers attacked an Allied bivouac near Saigon and fought U S troops northwest of the city. Thirty two Viet Cong were killed with light allied losses. B52 bombing resumed along the Cambodian border. A terrorist blast in Saigon wounded four women. Weather: sunny to fair with highs in the 60s and lows in the 20s to 30s.

Israel Warns Lebanon of Guerrilla Activity Amid Strikes
