The Ma Ariv report says Syria fired on Israeli positions along a 20 mile Golan Heights stretch late Monday into dawn. Israel answered with three volleys before midnight, no casualties reported, source unclear if Syrian army or guerrillas.
President Nixon met with 21 congressional leaders to recount his China journey with Henry Kissinger and William Rogers. He insisted no secret deals were struck, pledged to defend Taiwan, and described hopes for reduced Asia-Pacific tensions. Local weather: overcast with fog, highs in 50s to 60s, and east tides at 4.9 feet.
Allied reports of renewed Communist attacks in northern South Vietnam at midafternoon. Saigon officials stated President Thieu dismissed Maj. Gen. Le Ngol Trien at a Nha Trang strategy meeting amid warnings of a major strike from July to September along the DMZ and central regions.
A powerful quake near Hachijo Island 300 miles south of Tokyo toppled walls and caused landslides closing roads on Miyake and Hachijo Islands. No deaths or injuries reported though fires broke out in southwestern Tokyo and a forest fire started by a kiln collapse. Communications held steady.
The commission recommended approval for a planned development district to allow cluster housing on 25 acres north of North Avenue near O Street, with 135 units by Mallas Associates. It also backed rezoning to planned development, and an ordinance requiring use permits for all service station construction. Four votes to one approved the service station measure. one member dissented.
Five of eight announced candidates for Lompoc City Council attended a forum at Lompoc High School hosted by the Coalition for a New Tomorrow. Incumbent Charlotte Benton and challengers Steve Cox Gaspare Oneto Donald Schuyler and Emil Scolari answered questions on youth programs service stations free trade and business licenses. Absent were Mayor Art Scott William Johnson and Ann Dewberry.
County supervisors and the Planning Commission agreed to continue General Plan and zoning hearings this year to meet the state mandate by January 1 1973. A 4-1 vote backed a second resolution seeking a delay to January 1 1974 with a state appeal to clarify consistency.
