Traditions of suppressing groups mark American history
University of California sociologist Dr. Robert N. Bellah told a conference that the United States has long held a dual stance. One view sees mankind as unity, the other labels certain groups as defective to be controlled or destroyed. He cited slavery, lynching, and mass killings as actions defended by a self styled moral majority. He noted blacks and Communists as frequent victims and drew parallels to German reactions to Nazi crimes after World War II. The discussion followed reference to Viet Cong hostility as a non white Communist target.
