Israeli Jet Pilot Claims To Forcibly Force Libyan 727 Landing

The Libyan Boeing 727 was shot down over the Sinai by Israeli F4 Phantom pilots amid a top secret airfield overflight. Uri, the Israeli pilot, said cannon bursts and a wing tip shot forced the plane down as it headed toward the Suez Canal. Libyan survivors and Egyptian authorities reported high casualties with initial tallies around 92 dead and 7 survivors.

U.S. and China Agree to Liaison Offices and POW Release

In a landmark step toward normalization since Nixon’s China trip, the United States and China plan liaison offices in each capital. China will release two American prisoners of war held since the mid 1960s. Kissinger announced the agreements at a White House briefing with Lt Cmdr Robert J. Flynn among the pilots to be freed.

POW exchanges eyed as diplomacy edges toward liaison offices

UPI reports about possible exchange of about 100 American prisoners within five days as Hanoi released 163 and held 320. A plan for 1,000 South Vietnamese to swap for 7,000 North Vietnamese POWs is tied to Tuesday. Kissinger describes liaison offices as near formal contact with Beijing, while U.S. reviews Taiwan troop levels and China relations.

Nixon signals tax reforms and tariff authority plan

President Nixon told Congress he will seek broad tax reforms this year to reduce property burdens on the elderly and offer a tax break for families with children in parochial schools. ACLU to sue over Gideon Bible distribution in Lompoc schools

The Santa Barbara ACLU chapter plans to seek an injunction to stop Gideon Bibles in Lompoc public schools. School Superintendent Glen Wegner says distribution is halted and is reviewing legality. A judge ruled in 1969 that the district erred in permitting the Gideons to distribute Bibles on school grounds.

Lompoc hospital bid stalled by state notice snafu

A Sacramento bureaucratic snag blocked the California State Health Planning Council from voting on Lompoc Hospital District's plan for a 42 bed convalescent facility and 32 bed board and care unit at Walnut Avenue and Third Street. The delay of about 40 days followed attorney general guidance citing missing public notice after Channel Counties Health Council approval. Voters had approved a $1.5 million bond in June.

County Planning considers new general plan for the county

The County Planning Commission discussed the option of an entirely new general plan for the county amid mixed reactions. Winthrop Rockefeller Dies at 60 in Palm Springs

Former Arkansas governor and Rockefeller heir Winthrop Rockefeller died at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs at 60. A spokesman said he died at 8:30 am PST after battling pancreatic and liver cancer diagnosed last fall. He had surgery in New York in October and was convalescing at his winter home.
