Lompoc OKs backbone storm drain project to ease floods

City Council approves final design and engineering for a 482000 backbone storm sewer along F Street to Olive with flooding relief at Cypress A Ocean E and Chestnut College. Funding to come from flood control funds and gas tax with no bond issue, and design to begin immediately.

Nixon predicts programs will stretch dollars at stores

President Nixon says inflation relief programs especially in food will push dollars further by mid year. He defends Phase III wage and price controls, budget cuts, and dollar devaluation in a radio address previewing the State of the Union. He notes food prices will rise before supplies respond but will ease in the second half of the year.

Rolling quake shakes Southern California near Point Mugu

A magnitude 5.5 rolling earthquake struck Point Mugu and Oxnard early today, breaking windows and injuring two in Oxnard. Bricks loosened, a roof collapsed in one building, and power outages occurred in Port Hueneme as police closed streets and traffic was reduced to one lane. The tremor followed the 1971 San Fernando quake in the region.

Israelis Down Libyan Airliner Over Sinai Killing Many

Israeli interceptors shot down a Libyan Boeing 727 over the Sinai Peninsula after it refused to land. The crash east of the Suez Canal left at least 70 dead and 13 survivors, with evacuees taken to Tel Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv.

Federal aid authorized for Santa Barbara County

Governor Reagan signed a contract allocating about 10 million dollars of federal aid for flood relief in Santa Barbara County and neighboring regions. The agreement, with the U S Office of Emergency Preparedness, enables long term low interest loans, disaster employment, and unemployment payments to victims of the heavy rains and floods January 12 to 18.

Wahlers outlines Lompoc sewer plan amid FCI funding worries

Rogers Says Nixon Admin Will Seek Congress Support On Vietnam Rebuild

Secretary of State William P. Rogers told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Nixon administration would consult with Congress in advance and seek its support before any rebuilding program in Vietnam. He warned no commitments would be made without congressional backing and noted planning must justify launching any action. He hoped cease fires in Vietnam and Laos would momentum toward peace in Cambodia, while admitting hostilities have risen there after Lon Nol’s Jan 28 unilateral end to offensive operations.
