Viet Cong charge air raid near Cambodian border

Viet Cong claimed South Vietnamese planes bombed Duc Co airfield near the Cambodian border causing many deaths, while Saigon denied the incident and accused the Communists of cease-fire violations. The two sides also clashed over prisoner releases with VC saying Saigon lists 5,000 prisoners while real numbers reach about 30,000.

Weather system brings rain and snow to Southwest

Warm moist air moved into the Southwest today causing rain and snow at higher elevations from Southern California to Texas. Heavy precipitation reported in southern Arizona and New Mexico with scattered rain elsewhere. A travel advisory was issued for mountains in Texas west of the Pecos River for possible snow accumulations.

Butz warns of big January food price jump distortions

Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz says the January consumer price index will show the largest one month rise in retail food prices in 20 to 25 years, with 2 to 3 percent as the monthly gain. He warns some reporters will annualize the figure, exaggerating the rise to 24 to 36 percent. He defends current levels noting the share of take home pay spent on food declined last year.

In Belfast a pre-dawn attack on Tuesday killed two soldiers and wounded two others and an 8 year old passerby. Army operations focused on the Falls Road district as 18 suspected gunmen were detained and the death toll from 34 years of sectarian violence rose to 727.

Water Project Progress Report Sees Surplus, No State Funds Needed

California Water Project Chief William Gianelli told the Assembly Water Committee the system has a 1972 year end surplus of 159 million dollars, meeting the 1.75 billion general obligation debt without using the General Fund. The major aqueducts will finish this May with additions over 15 years supplying San Luis Obispo Santa Barbara and Solano Counties.
