Burglars Strike In Vandenberg Village Reported

Sheriff deputies say three homes in Vandenberg Village were hit on Thursday. Items taken included about $2 in pennies from Williard Skelton at 4422 Sirius Ave. No other losses reported. A fish aquarium was poisoned with alcohol killing 30 fish at the LaBand home.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Hosts Boat Safety Evening

The local Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary invites all boaters to a program on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the west wing of the Veterans Memorial Building. Three color films cover water rescue and boat safety, including airplane ditching and rescue procedures.

Planners to hear report on pollution regulation

The city planning commission will hear a comprehensive report on pollution controls including air water and solid waste rules. James Longtin, city attorney, will present the report and discuss sewer plant effluent underground water quality and environmental factors.

Goodyear Carveyor System Planned for San Jose

Akron based Goodyear announces a six mile Carveyor mass transit line for San Jose California with a capacity of 22 000 riders per hour. Phase one in mid 1972 will run from a perimeter lot to the San Antonio Plaza downtown. The all weather system uses wheelless cars on conveyor belting with boarding platforms and stations.

Protests Turned Violent as UCLA Rally Erupts

Police arrested 30 demonstrators on the UCLA campus and in Westwood Village after protests over the Chicago Seven verdict. An unlawful assembly was declared, an officer was sprayed with dog repellent, and two protesters received medical aid. About 400 attended the rally, which included a coffin symbolizing a vow to bury Judge Hoffman and U S corporations.

Kidnapped Alabama baby found safe after 34 hours

Shaun Yvette McLeroy, four months old, was recovered unharmed Friday night after being taken Thursday from her mother’s parked car near Ozark. A note directed relatives to a wooded area on Shipperville Road and Army helicopter crews located her in sagebrush. Medical officials reported no ill effects. she requires ongoing epilepsy medication.

Vandenberg officers receive Air Force Commendation Medals

Three Vandenberg AFB personnel Maj. Joe D. Mercer Maj. George D. Cain and TSgt. Herbert H. Duncan were awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal by Col. Francis R. Krause. Mercer earned it for meritorious service as missile staff officer and head of the Missile Maintenance Division at DCS Material, Headquarters Second Air Force. Cain received the award for meritorious service as a missile combat crew commander instructor with the 373rd Strategic Missile Squadron. Duncan was recognized for distinguished service in his role outside these highlights.

40 year sentence for bogus builder

Ventura Superior Court judge Howard E. Crandall sentenced John Van Geldern to 42 years in prison on 41 counts. He faced grand theft theft by false pretenses and 33 corporate code violations in the Hydro Ship Building Co scheme that leased Ventura marina space but built no ships. Investigators seek to block $500000 boughed from investors until access to funds is proven. Witnesses included a landscape gardener a motel owner and a Dutch immigrant who said the family’s last $2500 was lost to finance their child’s college education.

Reagan backs against mandatory busing in state mail

Governor Reagan’s letters show strong support for his opposition to compulsory school busing for racial integration. Los Angeles High Schools See Protest Rise Above National Average

A national survey cited by Rep. Alphonso Bell shows Los Angeles area high schools experienced protest disruptions and student disorders at about three times the national average over five years. One-third of principals expected disorders, with 51 percent of district schools affected. 41 percent of protests involved racial issues.
