Scientists study oil slick as 230000 gallon spill spreads

A presidential team of 14 scientists toured miles of beaches near Santa Barbara to assess the crude oil spill from Union Oil’s offshore well. They prepared recommendations to prevent future leaks and aid cleanup, amid ongoing seepage and a second two mile long slick.

Ladies lead Dean's list at Hancock College

Marines feted by Lompoc Council for Bailey bridge work

The Lompoc City Council approved 300 for a local style barbecue to honor the Marines of the 13th Engineer Battalion. The unit built a Bailey bridge over the Santa Ynez River at the FCI and is now constructing another at 13th Street with opening expected February 25.

Nevada plane vanishing leaves hopes fading for survivors

The ill fated DC3 carrying 35 aboard vanished after an early morning takeoff from Hawthorne Nevada amid a heavy snowstorm. Rescue teams battled drifting snow with jeeps and tracked vehicles while four Air Force search planes searched the high Sierra terrain. Pilot Fred Hall had flown the Hawthorne to Southern California route many times.

Public hearing set on Macco Realty plans at Gaviota

County Planning Commission schedules public hearing for February 26 on Macco Realty Co development in Gaviota featuring a Cape Cod Village styled complex with a new store restaurant gift shops and service station north of Highway 101. Planning officials note the project as gateway to a larger 14 000 acre second home and recreational complex west of Gaviota Hollister Ranch.

Health official urges county to rezone Santa Ynez watershed

County Health Director Joseph T. Nardo asked the County Planning Commission to consider rezoning the Santa Ynez River watershed from general to limited agricultural zoning to prevent potential water pollution. He cited Cachuma Juncal and Gibraltar reservoirs and warned intensive farming could be allowed under current AG zoning, urging action at the earliest opportunity. The commission referred the request to staff for further discussion with Dr. Nardo.

New Superior Court Judge Dodson to Be Sworn In Next Week

Floyd Dodson of Santa Barbara will be sworn in at 10 a.m. Monday in the County Courthouse Mural Room and assume duties that day. Retired Judge Percy Heckendorf plans to step down March 1 as the council assignment ends. County supervisors ask Legislature to create a seventh Superior Court department for the county due to rising caseloads.

Supervisors authorize defense for UCSB dem student suit

The County Counsel Office is authorized to defend District Attorney Milner and chief investigator Riley Millard in a lawsuit filed by Daniel Weisman, a UCSB student reporter, alleging assault on February 4 outside Santa Barbara Municipal Court. The suit seeks 25 damages plus 5000 punitive damages.
