Huskies and Alcindor Spark Bruins Rally Over Washington

UCLA center Lew Alcindor scored 22 points to lift top-ranked UCLA to a 53-44 win over Washington as the Bruins extended a long win streak. Washington led at halftime 33-25, but Alcindor sparked an 11-0 run late in the second half.

Debut of Spring Sports Delayed by Cabrillo Officials

Cabrillo High School athletic department announced postponements for most spring sport debuts. A Lompoc Cabrillo baseball scrimmage was canceled. Cabrillo Arroyo Grande track and Cabrillo Atascadero golf matches were postponed. Santa Barbara County League open swim meets proceed with Lompoc hosting San Marcos and Cabrillo at Dos Pueblos.

Kentucky Grabs SEC Lead With Rally at Georgia

Kentucky surged from behind to beat Georgia 85-77 in Athens as Mike Casey and Mike Pratt each scored 21 points and Bob McCowan added 16 off the bench. The Wildcats moved to 12-1 in the SEC, two games ahead of Tennessee after a Florida loss. UCLA extended its win streak to 36 with a 53-44 triumph over Washington.

Marlins Youth Swim Team Expands After Winter Meet

The Lompoc Marlins welcome seven new members to the competitive team after a winter invitational. Derek Pipes, Donna Howard, Tom Hicks, Denise Buzan, Marshall Frasher, Tonya Gil, and Susan McConnell earned time standards and joined the program.

USTA and Pro Groups Near Settlement on Open Tournaments

In New York UPI reports a 4 p.m. EST meeting aimed at a compromise between the United States Lawn Tennis Association and two pro groups the National Tennis League and World Championship Tennis. A settlement would let top pros like Rod Laver Tony Roche Ken Rosewall and Pancho Gonzalez compete in the 1969 open tournaments at Madison Square Garden Forest Hills Las Vegas and the Pacific Southwest. The groups had threatened a boycott over prize money and amateur-practice splits.

Opening Day Salmon Season Sparks Fresh Angling Interest

The long awaited 1969 salmon season opened amid good conditions after storms. Most fish were shakers but larger catches are expected as the season progresses. Three fish daily until March 1 then two, with a 20 inch bonus fish. Lake Cachuma reopened, marinas damaged, boats saved, trash cleanup ahead. Bill Jackowski Retires From Baseball Umpiring

Umpire Bill Jackowski quits after 17 MLB seasons due to eye ailment. He worked in three World Series and four All Star Games and more than 2600 NL games. NL President Warren Giles praises his experience and declares replacement Dave Davidson of the Eastern League. Jackowski, 54, began in 1946 in the Blue Ridge League and lived in North Walpole, New Hampshire, where he was born in 1915.
